Elastic Fantastic

Looser wool trousers with comfy waistbands are in.

Take a deep breath, let loose and ditch the skinny pants. Sleek, slouchy trousers are back in a major way. From Hermès to Uniqlo, it seems every designer and fashion brand is in on the comfort factor. Want to join them? Stylist Anja Potkonjak from Alphamale Styling has a few tips to help you keep the look squarely in the 2010s, not the ’80s.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

To keep this look fashion-forward and not balloon-like, fit is key. “I’m a stickler for the way a pant fits a man,” Potkonjak says. “Even though the relaxed trouser comes as a looser fit, you still need to pay attention that the pants are sitting properly for your body shape.” If you need to, take your newfound pair to a tailor to get that perfect fit.

HOW TO WEAR IT

A pant that can do work-play double duty is always a plus and the relaxed-waist trouser fits the bill. For the boardroom, Potkonjak suggests pairing it with a fitted, made-to-measure dress shirt. Add a pair of this season’s on-trend chunky dress shoe and you’re set. On more casual days, a cashmere sweater, blazer and boots will keep you looking smart — and comfortable. Have Saturday morning brunch plans? Add a fitted T-shirt and leather kicks.

SUIT YOUR PERSONALITY

When shopping for new trends a man should always consider what suits his personality and what he will feel the most confident and comfortable in,” Potkonjak says. “In the end, you want to make a smart purchase. Otherwise it will end up sitting in your closet and clothes are meant to be worn.”

Three pairs to complete your day

For the boardroom

Suede loafers, leather monk shoes or brogues will keep your look clean. Look for a toe that’s long rather than rounded to keep the fashion-forward vibe going. You’ll find designer options at David’s and a good selection of reasonably priced pairs at The Bay.

For the no-meeting day

You can have a little more fun with a black leather desert boot or Chelsea boot. J. Crew has stylish options such as a Kenton leather cap-toe boot ($325).

On the weekend

It’s all about the sleek white leather or grey suede trainers. Club Monaco has great sneakers, carrying European brands Zespa, Buttero and Wings  + Horns.
